Mentoring
I aim to help your child become organised and learn how to improve their attainment.
Children all attain or achieve at different levels. Having tutoring or mentoring can help your child learn how to improve their attainment themselves but it won't suddenly guarantee then an A*, a Distinction or a grade 9. Children have a natural ability level and you should have an idea of this from their school.
At GCSE this is often based on a YELLIS test done at the start of yr 10. It shows the school a pupil's potential in different subjects - their strengths e.g. very good numeracy skills, and their weaknesses e.g. weaker literacy (writing and reading) skills. A student with this profile might have a target grade 7 in Maths but a target of 5 or 6 in English Language / Literature.
Using this information, teachers can then identify an appropriate target grade for your child, they work with students to try and help them achieve this grade or higher (known in education as value-added).
Mentoring will help your child to feel in control of their learning and know how to organise their time and speak to their teachers with the aim of helping them achieve a value-added grade.
At A level / BTEC, target grades are normally generated based on GCSE attainment and / or ALIS data

Tutoring
I have a degree in European Business and my teaching subject is Business Studies, I have been teaching in state and independent schools for 30 years.
I can teach GCSE and A level content for all boards and also work on examination technique.
The main problem areas I find students have difficulty with are:
Business calculations -
- break even analysis
- financial ratios
- network analysis
- investment appraisal etc
Writing technique -
Many students do not feel they know what examiners are looking for or how to write and structure writing to achieve that: it's a bit like trying to hit a dartboard whilst wearing a blindfold - if you don't know where the target is, you can't hit it head on.
Lack of clear notes caused by student or teacher absence.
Prices
I charge £35ph for GCSE tutoring and £40ph for A-Level tutoring
These prices may vary according to location. Please contact me for more information.
Safeguarding
For safeguarding reasons I do not tutor students without another adult on the premises.
Please note that, if your child discloses something which is regarded as a safeguarding issue (under KCSIE) during tutoring, I have a responsibility to report it.
